ADIRONDACK ADORNMENT- FINDING INSPIRATION

Shutters & Adirondack Chairs – Great Pairing

Adirondack style chairs are familiar to many of us. They have an easily recognizable shape. Wide Slats with open spaces between slats, a slanted back and slanted seat with wide arms. Sometimes the ends of the slats are straight and sometimes they are rounded. It evokes a feeling of sitting back and relaxing.

Inspiration comes in many forms. I had a client who wanted to re- do her son’s bedroom with a long lasting style in mind. We went upstairs to see the bedroom and upon looking out the window I saw evergreen trees. The idea immediately came to me. Why not have a theme bedroom based on an Adirondack style. When I think Adirondack style, the thought that comes to me is sitting on a porch in these relaxing chairs and a glass of lemonade in my hand. Maybe a little corny, but what the heck.

Why not bring that outdoor style indoors. This theme could transition from childhood into adulthood. A rustic based theme is perfect for a boys bedroom. The point here is don’t be afraid to mix styles. Mixing styles can be fun! Don’t be afraid to try. To carry this out, I did the following: See Part 2:

FINDING INSPIRATION & SOLVING A DESIGN CHALLENGE:

Window Treatment

I suggested 2 ½” Wide Plantation Shutters. The shutters had standard Tilt Bar with Split Tilt. The tilt bar makes the shutters more traditional and classic looking and Split Tilt allows the top shutters slats to be tilted independently of the bottom slats. This way you can keep the bottoms closed and the top open making
it very versatile. A simple cornice with brass nail heads was placed above the shutters high enough to allow the top of the shutter when open to not bump into the cornice. The nail heads are a nice
design detail to customize the look.

Walls

I suggested using a rustic texture- a grass cloth look wallpaper. It was a camel color providing a warm tone. The wallpaper was a fabric backed vinyl. It had a raised surface texture similar to real grass cloth. Vinyl can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth whereas real grass cloth cannot be cleaned with water. Water will stain real grass cloth being it’s a natural textile.

Floors

I suggested using an area rug in a plaid pattern. The colors in the rugshould reflect nature. The colors were beige, gold, amber and brown. These are all tones that coordinate with the color of the wallpaper and the stained color of the furniture.

Bedding

I suggested a custom-made reversible duvet cover. A duvet cover allows you to use any comforter inside. The duvet can be zippered, have buttons or velcro at the opening to allow you to insert the comforter. We re-used the existing comforter which was more budget friendly and in good shape. Reversible means the top and bottom can be made in two different fabrics. Hence you can turn the bedding over and have two different color/pattern options. Turn down one side and have it can be contrasting to the other side. A linen looking polyester fabric in 2 colors was used. The polyester/
cotton blend is easy to spot clean and can be laundered or dry cleaned.

Accessories

To complete the Adirondack theme, I found an old canoe. The inside was a neutral stain and the outside an expresso color. It was placed vertically in the corner of the room across from the bed to be seen. Picture frames were wooden with darker colors to add contrast.

To sum up, the room was created to have a relaxed style that was unique and tasteful. Our client was very pleased with the room and we achieved the challenge of being creative and sensible at the same time.
