WOOL CARPET- The Natural Advantages of Wool

Godfrey Hirst Wool Carpet

We get asked all the time are wool carpets worth the extra money. The answer is simple. If you want the most durable carpeting option available, wool is your best option. Although more expensive than synthetic fiber carpets, the value it adds to your home plus it’s longevity actually makes it a very good option for your budget. Here are some more reasons:

Easy to Clean

Wool fibers are composed of a scale type structure covered by a natural membrane. Dirt does not sink in so regular vacuuming keeps wool carpets looking new and clean.

Repels Water & Stains

Wool naturally repels water and stains thanks to a natural membrane that covers the fiber’s core. Consider that 80% of all stains are water based. Stains don’t soak into wool. Instead, the stains remain on a wool carpet’s surface allowing you to wipe them up.

Retains Its Shape

A wool fiber has natural elasticity that allows it to stretch up to 40 % beyond its original length and then bounce back. This fiber elasticity helps to resist furniture crush and resist matting down with heavy traffic.

Flame Resistant

Wool is naturally flame resistant. Drop a lit match on a wool carpet and you will see the flame go out. The lack of damage to the wool fibers will amaze you. Simply brush away the slight charring and there is no sign of burned fibers.

Fade Resistant

Wool resists fading because dyes penetrate to the fiber’s cores. Dyes are locked in by a molecular bonding process that occurs inside the fiber. Color cannot get out, so a wool carpet retains its original color for years.

Resists Static

Wool naturally resists static and mildew. Static is reduced by and MILDEW wools ability to retain up to 30% of its weight in moisture. Because wool has a naturally low pH, it resists mildew, mold, and fungal attack in almost every climate.

Lastly, one thing to be aware of is the carpet may have wool in the name, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is 100% wool. For example, wool blends. Wool blends have other materials mixed in. It is still may be a good option, but if you are looking for all wool, check the disclosure listed under materials.
